What are the Fringe Benefits of your city?

Fringe Benefits LogoCities are awesome. I’ve been lucky to live in both Chicago and NYC where there is never a shortage of arts, culture, shopping and restaurants.

But sometimes you feel the need to escape  and see what there is just outside the city limits. The new show Fringe Benefits featuring Katie Craver is exactly what you need!

Katie hired me to help with illustration on her opening titles the map art as well as the logo/title for the show. Currently there is just a pilot episode, and hopefully a full series will begin one of these days.

Have a look and let us know what you think!

What is it with you designers?

This was what I heard on the other end of my phone today.

Last night after I got home from a holiday networking portfolio party, I received an email with a inquiry about a design project. It wasn’t a name I recognized and the name of the business in the persons signature was some type of financial institution. Right away my suspicion began, but work is work and who knows it might be a dream project with a huge budget to carry me into 2011.

I called the next day as they requested, and the call went to voicemail. They are probably in a meeting or having lunch or something. I leave a message and reply to the email to ensure they know I have attempted to make contact.

An hour later I get the call from this potential client:

Hello, do you have time to talk about a design project?

Sure, what is it you are looking for?

Well I have A LOT of design work, but it all starts with a logo. You see I have an idea of what I want for a logo, but I don’t have the ability to make it look good. I’m going to send you a quick email of some files of other logos that I’m looking at.

Ummm, well let me stop you there

What you’re not interested?

When I design a logo for a company or individual there is a process to create that logo so that it will be unique to your business, starting from scratch.

This is starting from scratch! This is about business not design! What is it about you designers?!

Well I guess I’m not the right person for the project.

Well you don’t get it buddy.

Someday another mediocre logo will be born, luckly I will have nothing to do with it.
